Mother’s Day Celebration and Croatian Folklore Festival

Mother’s Day Celebration and Croatian Folklore Festival

Our Croatian Folklore Ensemble “Hrvatska Zora” had a very eventful May. We started off by celebrating all Mother’s, Grandmothers, Great Grand-Mothers and Mother figures during our annual Mother’s Day Luncheon. This is traditionally a “dress rehearsal” of sorts for the groups traveling to the annual Western Canadian Croatian Folklore Festival.

The Mother’s Day celebration began Sunday, May 14th, 2023 with Holy Mass, where Junior and Intermediate members participated in their nošnje. The same children performed songs and dances from the Posavina region after mass, followed by lunch. As the afternoon continued, the community also enjoyed performances by our Senior, Alumni and Tamburaši members who performed dances from Lika, Zagorje and a medley of songs from all across Croatia.

The following weekend, Hrvatska Zora traveled to Edmonton, Alberta May 20h, 2023 where the Western Canadian Croatian Folklore festival was held. All three performing groups were well received during the concert. Hrvatska Zora proudly represented our community from Winnipeg after not being able to attend any in-person festivals since 2019! For longstanding members, it was great to be back again connecting with old friends and celebrating our cultural heritage. For our new members traveling, it was a fun filled experience making new friends from across western Canada.

Every year, the Croatian Canadian Folklore Federation – West awards a scholarship to a deserving young student for post-secondary education. Our very own Senior group member, Julia Rendulić, was awarded the runner-up scholarship this year. Congratulations Julia! A new executive committee was also formed during the festival, with our very own Petra
Lucyk elected as treasurer of the CCFFW. Congratulations Petra! We would also like to thank Anthony Brnjas, President of the CCFFW for the past eight years, for his time and commitment to preserving our culture and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours!

On behalf of Hrvatska Zora, we would like to extend the most heartfelt thank you to all members, volunteers and families who were in attendance that helped make both events a great success. A special thank you to Fr. Peter and our entire parish for their selfless support, as our faith is deeply tied with our culture and folklore. Bog i Hrvati!
